Why Gun Violence Research Matters!

Gun violence is a complex public health issue that takes many forms—including suicides, homicides, mass shootings, and community violence. High quality research and data are integral to the prevention of gun violence. We need research to help us understand the causes and the consequences of gun violence in its various forms. For the past 20 years, federal funding for gun violence research has been severely restricted. In the absence of federal funding, local and state-level initiatives—both public and private—are needed.
